Staying In

It might technically be spring, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. Since we are all staying inside anyway, why not lean into the current (albeit temporary) situation, and make your home someplace you never want to leave? Small touches can have a major impact on the way your space feels and how it makes YOU feel. Below are a few of my favorite, go-to methods for creating an inviting environment:

Lighting // This is huge. NEVER underestimate the impact that proper (or inadequate) lighting can have on a space. While working from home, adequate task lighting is obviously important. But when you are done working for the day, I recommend banning any and all overhead lighting. If your lamps are on a dimmer? Even better! Turn the dial down low and set the mood. Light that candle in your favorite scent that you’ve been saving, or use this time to treat yourself and splurge on a luxury home fragrance. Soft, low, diffused light creates an intimate vibe perfect for staying in and relaxing.

Textiles // Be it a throw blanket or accent pillow, the items we come into contact with when relaxing should be soft to the touch and add layers of comfort and warmth to our spaces. Velvet, faux mohair, and soft brushed cotton are all perfect choices for this transitional season - not too heavy, but cozy enough to make us reach for them over and over again. So pull out all of your softest blankets and use them liberally around your space.

Books // A good read, or a beautiful coffee table style book full of photography, can be a welcome distraction from news and social media overload. These are just a few personal past and current favorites:

If you are looking for inspiration for your work space, this is it.

I’ve yet to read this one, but it is next on my list, and I am very much looking forward to it.

Art // Visual interest and inspiration are always important in a space, but right now even more so. Group a collection of framed photos someplace new that you will see them everyday, or take the time to hang that piece you’ve been meaning to. You could even invest in a new piece of artwork that will bring you joy for years to come. There are some fantastic online sites available to purchase artwork, so you don’t even have to leave the house to find that special piece. Some of my favorite sources are Artfully Walls, Chairish, Hotel Magique and Saatchi Art.

Add a cocktail or freshly brewed cup of coffee and your favorite music to any of the above for extra points.  Let’s embrace the current situation and savor the time spent at home, by making it someplace we truly enjoy being.

How are you navigating the current, unexpected time we find ourselves in?
