home {for the holidays}

As we are still for the most part confined to our own homes after all these months due to the ongoing pandemic, I find myself approaching the holidays a bit differently this year. Instead of focusing on the fact that we will not be able to see our families, I am choosing to instead embrace the opportunity to stay in one place, and truly focus on the holidays and meaning behind them. To be able to take things at a slower pace, be present, and immerse myself in the season.

This includes taking a more deliberate and thoughtful approach to how I decorate my own home for the holidays. I want to make it feel special, in light of the circumstances, and also create a vibe that ideally lasts beyond just the holiday season. For that reason, my recommendations this year are less holiday-specific, and more seasonally focused.

Scent // Scent can have a major emotional impact on how your space makes you feel. It is no secret that I adore Diptyque for their layered and complex yet subtle scents. This candle evokes childhood memories of midnight mass, yet would also be a beautiful and mysterious scent throughout the winter months. This citrusy, slightly spicy scent is also oh-so-seasonally appropriate.

Taste // Since we have been cooking three meals a day at home most every single day, I am loving the idea of this edible garden. The “aromatic herbs” collection is the perfect flavor palette for all of the autumnal and winter dishes this time of year. This would also make a lovely gift for the chef in your life.

Touch // Sink into the sofa or your favorite chair and curl up with this throw. Is there anything cozier than boucle? This option is cruelty-free, and adds a layer of texture to any room you use it in. Or opt for this ruched faux fur throw for a more opulent vibe.

Sight // Lighting is seasonal decor that can easily be left in place long after the holidays are over. Think cut-glass candle holders, strings of mini-lights, or hurricanes. Pair them with garland (real or faux) on a mantle or tabletop for the holidays, then group them together with your other favorite decor afterwards to add a warm and inviting glow to your space.

Sound // For such an audiophile, I am a bit embarrassed that I do not own any vinyl. This record player would be an aesthetically pleasing way to listen to favorite holiday albums, as well as an excuse to grow a music collection throughout the rest of the year.

What are you doing to add a festive feel to your space during this unusual holiday season?
